How Long Does It Take to Feel the Effects of Testosterone Therapy?

Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) has received pretty good media coverage over the years. A lot of men (and doctors) swear by it, while others still may have a few concerns. Countless studies have shown that TRT works wonders for those with low testosterone levels, however, these same studies also point out that there could be a few side effects from TRT.

Also, over the years, a lot of different questions have been raised (how long does a testosterone shot last, for instance) and a few misconceptions have also made their way to the public. In this article, we will separate fact from fiction and tell you what to expect from testosterone clinics.

Boosting T levels has its own set of perks and some of them can drastically improve your everyday life.

For instance, TRT can help you:

  • Get your energy levels up – you feel more energetic throughout the day
  • It can restore your libido – better sex drive
  • Improve your mood
  • Build muscle mass easier and more efficiently
  • Burn body fat
  • May help fighting erectile dysfunction

What are the risks?

There are also risks involved, however, they are more likely to happen when not using the proper dosages and when the drug isn’t administered by a professional.

These risks may include:

  • Oily skin or acne – if you have a genetic predisposition for it and the dosages you take are high
  • Breast enlargement or gynecomastia – also more likely when dosages are high
  • Blood cloth formation (increased risk)
  • Testicular shrinkage
  • Risk of heart attack and stroke

As mentioned, most of these risks are dosage dependent, however, you might not receive TRT if you have breast or prostate cancer. Also, testosterone clinic might not be for you if you suffer from conditions such as obstructive sleep apnea, benign prostatic hyperplasia, your red blood cell count is well above normal, or if you suffer from congestive heart failure.

Administration methods

There are a few ways you might receive TRT and each has its own cons and pros.

    • Gels – All you have to do is rub into your skin on a daily basis. After application, the treated area shouldn’t be touched by anyone else to avoid getting testosterone in their system. Using a nasal gel can solve this problem.
    • Patches – They are easy to use but can cause rashes and you may have to apply them several times a day.
    • Subcutaneous pellets – They are inserted under the skin every 3 or 6 months. This method comes with the least amount of hassle, however, the application requires minor surgery.
  • Buccal patch – Just put the patches on the gum (upper gum) twice every day. Simple to use, but can cause gum disease or can irritate the gums.
  • Injections – The least costly way to get TRT. Some might ask how long does it take T injections to work because they think it’s a lengthier process. Generally, the effects of T injections start to become noticeable after 4 to 6 weeks. The only problem with injections is that they have to be administered carefully since T levels can drop significantly if injections aren’t performed regularly. How long a single shot lasts is dosage-dependent.

Testosterone replacement therapy can help men who suffer from low T and can help them live a better life. However, just as with every other medication, people should be cautious and always ask for their doctor’s advice.
